When an MBBR system doesn't perform as expected, the first things we often check are COD loading, DO, biofilm, or media filling ratio.
But there is another factor that is sometimes overlooked:
Mixing.
MBBR media carriers are designed to move continuously throughout the reactor. If the carriers cannot move properly, even a high-quality media may not deliver its full potential.
🔹 Media may accumulate in certain areas.
🔹 Dead zones can develop inside the reactor.
🔹 Biofilm growth may become uneven.
🔹 Oxygen and substrate distribution can become less uniform.
🔹 Some media may remain underutilized.
In other words, the problem may not be the biological process itself.
It may be that the microorganisms are simply not getting the right environment to work effectively.
Before changing the media or increasing the filling ratio, look at:
✔ Air distribution and aeration intensity
✔ Mixer location and performance
✔ Media movement across the entire reactor
✔ Potential dead zones
✔ Reactor geometry
✔ Media density and filling ratio
The goal is not simply to make the water move.
The goal is to achieve consistent and effective media movement throughout the reactor.
A well-designed MBBR system is a balance between media, biology, oxygen transfer, and mixing.
So the next time an MBBR system underperforms, don't immediately ask:
“Do we need more media?”
Ask:
“Is all the media actually moving the way it should?”
Sometimes, improving mixing can be more valuable than adding more carriers.
